LOS ANGELES (CBS) Apple enjoyed more ego-stroking this week as they announced that over 2 million iPads have been sold. So has the product lived up to our meteoric expectations in terms of changing lives and industries? Well, according to Steve Jobs who spoke at the All Things D conference there is one thing he doesn’t expect it to do, and that is to save journalism:

“We have a lot of goals for it, but one of my beliefs very strongly is that any democracy depends on a free, healthy press…I think we need editorial now more than ever,” he said. One way to overcome the economic hurdle is for people to pay for content, he added, and the iPad offers a way to have applications rather than just static web pages.

Sounds great but it hasn’t worked for everyone. GQ only sold less than 500 of its apps since its launch a week ago. Wired, on the other hand, sold 24,000 apps at $4.99 a pop in the first 24 hours.
