In April Cirque, founded by billionaire Guy Laliberte, announced plans to produce a Michael Jackson-themed show to start touring in 2011.

Before captivating Las Vegas crowds with famed music-inspired acrobatic shows, Laliberte was playing the harmonica and eating fire on the streets of Europe and Canada.

I’m fortunate enough to work with a group of companies spread across the world, who are all doing amazing things in their respective industries.

As I’ve immersed myself in the startup community, I’ve come across a lot of people out there doing incredible things for startups and the community as a whole – Dave McClure, Chris Sacca, Paul Graham, Kevin Rose, Gary Vaynerchuk, Tim Ferris, and the Seed Camp crew are all doing wonderful things to help young companies. (I recommend following all of them on twitter.)

One of the best parts of my job is not the speaking or writing, but traveling in the field and selling. Sometimes my own products, and sometimes with sales reps from a variety of industries. When going on sales calls for the first time, there are a few things you can do upfront that can make a big difference later on in the sales cycle. It’s not rocket science or some kind of magic sales secret, just plain common courtesy and common sense.

While more than three million businesses, brands and celebrities have created Facebook Pages, many are struggling to figure out how best to use them. Companies are finding that even when they keep their pages updated with fresh content, they still aren’t seeing steady growth in their fan base.

And yet there are many brands who’ve surpassed the one million fan mark, while their peers have languished in the thousands. What’s their secret? These companies have figured out how to move from “broadcast” mode into engagement. They have engaged people so well that their fans even invite others along for the ride.

Do you own a small business? How long have you been using social media as a marketing tool and what have you learned?

In a little over a months time I will have owned my business for just about three years. When I began using social media some thirty six months ago, I had no real marketing background experience, and I certainly had never written a blog post, interacted in a forum, or sent a Tweet.

My social media evolution began with a simple foray into blogging as a way to try and rank well for some keywords related to my business. From there I expanded to niche forums, review sites, FLICKR, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.
